Headshot of Matthew Chen

Hi, I'm Matthew Chen!

About me

Nice to meet you! I'm a PhD student and an NSF Graduate Research Fellow at UC Davis. I'm passionate about providing data-driven solutions to complex but meaningful problems. In particular, my research lies at the intersection between data science and water resources engineering. For example, I answer questions like "How can deep learning better capture human decision-making in water systems?" and "Can reinforcement learning reveal new water management strategies for a changing climate?"

Beyond academia, I worked as an analytical data scientist at Genentech, where I applied my statistical modeling and data analysis skills to support high-profile clinical trials for respiratory diseases. I also hold an M.S. in Statistics and a B.S. in Civil Engineering, both from UC Davis. In my free time, I enjoy making music and finding awesome new restaurants. I love meeting new people - feel free to reach out!
